Hilda May Grant, aged 99 years, passed away November 16th, 2012 at Pioneer Lodge in Moose Jaw. Hilda was born on July 30th, 1913 in Baildon, SK to James and Edith (Newberry) Thoroughgood. She was educated in Baildon and Moose Jaw. At the age of 16, she began dating, however, her date insisted he always bring along his best friend. It was his best friend who eventually became the love of her life and her future husband. Hilda and John “Jack” Grant married on June 18th, 1932 and they made their home in Moose Jaw. To this union was born a daughter, Joan. In addition to his regular job, Jack and Hilda operated “The Dug Out” at Ross Wells Park where they became well known for their English Style Fish and Chips. Later Hilda worked evenings at Temple Gardens and Saskatchewan Government Insurance. Jack, with Hilda’s help, built a cabin at Buffalo Lake complete with a tree house for the grandchildren. Hilda was a wonderful cook and baker. She was a crossword puzzle enthusiast. She and Jack gardened, were avid readers, loved playing cards and enjoyed many trips to Bismarck to visit their daughter and her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years Jack; her son-in-law, Paul H. Magedanz; her parents and two sisters; four brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law and her niece, Dona Horton. Hilda is survived by her daughter, Joan Magedanz of Bismarck, ND; two grandsons, Jon (Kay) Magedanz of Spokane, Washington and Michael (Riva) Magedanz of Kent, Washington; two great-grandsons, Paul M. and William Magedanz, both at home with their parents in Kent. She is also survived by nephew, Murray (Anne) Tarras of Calgary, AB and his family; nieces: Yvonne (Allen) Cameron of Moose Jaw, SK, Doreen Clemenshaw of Coquitlam, BC, Bernice Gleim of Moose Jaw, SK, Geraldine (Uwe) Schuett of Clavet, SK and Shirley (Ray) Hankey of Saskatoon, SK, and their families; as well as by the family of her predeceased niece. Cremation has taken place. In accordance with Hilda’s wishes, there will be No Funeral Service. Her ashes will be interred with her husband’s at Sunset Cemetery. The family extends special thanks for the care, expertise and love extended to Hilda by Allen Cameron and Shirley Morrison. Thanks to all her friends for their love and laughs over the years. Also thanks to her Doctors, Nurses and the care providers at Pioneer Lodge in Moose Jaw, St. Joseph Hospital in Gravelbourg and the Moose Jaw Union Hospital.
