NEW GLASGOW – John Stewart Murray, age 91, of the Glen Haven Manor and formerly of McColl St., New Glasgow, passed away Thursday, November 22, 2012 in the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born in Trenton in 1921, he was a son of the late Henry and Margaret “Annie” (Cochrane) Murray.
He was a retired supervisor with National Steel Car in Ontario. John served in The Royal Canadian Army Service Corp from September 1941 to December 1945 in England, France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. An active member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 Trenton since 1986, he served for many years as Sgt. at Arms and was also very active in the Building Restoration Committee, as well as the Poppy Campaign.
He was predeceased by sisters: Lucy, Dorothy and Jean; brother, Roy; his companion of many years, Myrtle Devane and her daughter Colleen.
He is survived by a daughter: Marie Rankin, Hamilton, ON; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; chosen daughter: Dawn (Jim) Hayman, Trenton; special niece, Betty Ann Cameron; nephew, Harvey Mitchell; numerous great nieces and nephews; Myrtle’s son, Maurice (Nancy) Devane.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A public graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Hillside Cemetery with Mr. Fergie MacKay officiating.
Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 are asked to attend to conduct their service at the cemetery. Reception to follow at Branch 29, Main St., Trenton.
