Passed peacefully away on November 22, 2012 at the age of 97 years, Helen was the last member of the Charles family. Predeceased by parents: William and Effie (Whiteway); brothers: Robert and William and sister, Jean (Charles) Colbourne. Predeceased also by husband, William and young son Barry; son-in-law, Sandy Thomson; daughter-in-law, Anita Hand; “special son-in-law”, Owen Crotty and granddaughter, Christine Hand, USA. Leaving to mourn with much thanks to God for her long life are daughters: Helen Taylor (Derm), Sandra Thomson, Gail Dooley (Tom) and Jacquelyn Moser (Robert) ON; sons: Errol (Jessica) USA, Ken (Sandra), David (Georgina), Gary (Lorraine), Derek (Patricia) ON and Ed (Reta) ON. The memory of mom’s warm smile and caring ways will be treasured by her 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Remembered also by many nieces and nephews in the Charles and Hand families. Mom was a special person who left a lasting impression on those she met over the years. She was a beautiful person inside and out. We, the family of Helen (Charles) Hand, are deeply grateful for the love, support and kindness of so many people in so many ways, particularly the staff of the 1st floor North at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home where she resided for the past 10 years. Our profound thanks to all of you who cared for her daily. Special thanks to the Sisters and Father Maddigan who visited with her regularly, Dr. Lawrence Alteen who cared for her so dearly, the recreation staff (Hughie, Barry and Pam), Myra her hairdresser and Will (House Keeping) who never failed to look after her many requests. Thanks also to Fr. John Paul Westin of St. Thomas’. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday, November 26, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Thomas Anglican Church. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date. Please no flowers by request. Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
