We the family of Gwen Milley regret to announce her passing on November 22, 2012 at the Glace Bay General Hospital at the age of 93.
Born in Worksop, England on June 20, 1919, Gwen came to live in Donkin at the age of three. Gwen was the daughter of Bill and Sarah Thornton and was raised by William and Laura (Hall) Grant.
Gwen resided at 1631 Grand Lake Rd with her granddaughter Edith (Manning). Prior to this she lived with her daughter Gayle (Robbie). Gwen worked at the Glace Bay General Hospital for many years before leaving to do housekeeping for several doctors in the area. Gwen was superintendent of St. Luke's United Church Sunday School program for many years. St. Luke's U.C.W. church for women, L.O.B.A Lodge and taught Junior Lodge. She bowled for many years with two bowling leagues and also attended the Adult Day Program at the Glace Bay General Hospital, which she much enjoyed.
Gwen is survived by her two daughters Carol (Art), Gayle; son-in-law Bobbie Jenkins; two sons, Claude (Anne) and Phillip grandchildren Edith (Manning), Robert (Wendy), Paul (Cheryl) Brenda (Martin), Allison, Denise (Greg), Charles, Tanya (Jason), Jason (Amanda), Lynn (Silby), Kevin (Wanda); great grandchildren, Norma, Teri Lynn, Ross, Colin, Nicole, Emma, Jaelyn, Zackary, Alexis, Liam, Martin, Joseph, Devon, John Robert, Alexander, Logan, Marcus and Chelsea and great great granddaughters, Dakota, Hannah and Abigail; several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her parents; husband, Absolem Milley; sons, David and Keith and two babies, Wilfred and Edward; brothers, Donald, Lawrence, Wilfred, Edwin and Leonard; sisters, Gladys, Martha (Pat), Doris (Peg) and twin sisters in infancy, Hannah and Marjorie.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, 849-7520. Memorial service will be held Monday , November 26 at 2 p.m. from St. Luke's United Church with Rev. Chris Matheson officiating with interment to take place in St. Luke's Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Society and Kidney Foundation, family flowers only.
