Wesley Roland

Born: March 31st, 1930

Passed on: December 10th, 2012

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our much loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, Wesley England Roland at the Glace Bay Hospital on Dec. 10, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of the late August and Florence Roland of Mill Creek. He and our mother met when she was teaching school in Mill Creek and he followed her to Glace Bay, where they married and raised their family.
He left home at an early age to work on the lake boat SS LeMoine, sailing the Great Lakes. For many years dad worked for Isle Royale Beverages covering the “country run” making friends along the way. As kids it was a highlight to go with dad in the pop truck, where he would introduce us to his many friends. His love of truck driving carried him on to many jobs during his lifetime though he always considered himself a trucker. His last job was working for Canada Post along with his late sister, Eileen delivering mail from Bras d’Or to Boisdale and Long Island. He loved having a good chat along the route. At the age of 79, he reluctantly retired but always kept himself busy in his garage doing his woodwork or helping out a friend with a project.
Dad is survived by his daughter, Jean (Noel) Bramwell; sons, Ross (Paula) and Robert, all of Glace Bay; grandchildren, Daniel and Christopher Roland, Glace Bay, Pamela Bramwell (Ben Martin), Reserve; Poppa’s special girl, great-granddaughter, Alexis Martin. He is also survived by sisters, Annie Fitzgerald, Mill Creek, Marie MacMullin, Truro and brother, George (Helen) David, Sydney and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Irene Isobel (Adams), sister, Eileen, brother, Wendell and sister-in-law, Helen Roland, brother in childhood, Claude Wilson, brothers-in-law, Winston Scotty Fitzgerald and Servine MacMullin.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, Union Street, Glace Bay. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, Dec. 11) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, Dec. 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Burial in St. Mary’s Anglican Church Cemetery.
At dad’s request no flowers please, donations may be made in his memory to the CAPE, St. Mary’s Church, Cape Breton Cancer Center, palliative care or charity of choice.
Online condolences may be sent to www.pattenfuneral.com.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Gordon Spencer and the compassionate staff of 3rd East, Glace Bay Hospital and palliative care for their wonderful care shown to our dad during his illness. Words just are not enough.
