Passed on: December 10th, 2012

We, the family of John B. McKinnon of Glace Bay, regretfully announce his sudden passing on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at the Glace Bay Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines, John was the son of the late Melvin and Stella (Burchell) McKinnon.
John retired from Victoria Park, Sydney as a Sergeant, Canadian Corps. of Commissionaires. He was also a former legion member. John was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan as well as a devoted animal lover. He could often be seen in Sydney at the dog park with his faithful companion, Jigger. John had a great sense of humour and he loved to torment, all in the hope of getting a good laugh. But mostly; John will always be remembered as a very generous and compassionate man; ready to give you the shirt off his back if needed. John was very devoted to his nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, he loved them dearly.
John is survived by his daughter, Darlene McKinnon, Halifax; two brothers, Lauchie, Sydney, Melvin, Alberta; five sisters, Mary C. Tobin, Sydney Mines, Irene Sharkey (Dale), North Sydney, Bernice MacNeil (Bill), Lower Sackville, Iris Cosgrove (Art), Lunenburg, and Denice Prudhomme (Rick), Calgary.
John was predeceased by his wife, Jeanette Marie (Gouthro) McKinnon in 2009; two sisters, Carol Ann Oram and Isabel; two brothers, John and Charles Michael; brothers-in-law, David Tobin, Brother Gouthro and sisters-in-law, Tina Gouthro and Anita Gouthro.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee will be held Friday morning at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall.
As an expression of sympathy for John, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the I.W.K. Hospital, Halifax.
