John Alan ‘Books’ MacDougall passed away peacefully on Dec. 23, 2012, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Sydney on March 13, 1949, John was the loving son of the late Johnny ‘Flat’ and Mary ‘Books’ (MacDonald) MacDougall.
A Pier boy at heart, John was a member of Holy Redeemer parish. He was employed by the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board as a teacher from 1973 until his retirement in 2006. John had many hobbies which included motorcycling, skating, skiing and snow boarding. He loved his summers at the ‘bungalow’ in Big Pond where he enjoyed many ceilidhs with family and friends. John will always be remembered by his family, friends and colleagues for his unique sense of humour.
John is survived by his wife, Jeanette; sons, John and Ian; sister, Tina Marie MacNeil; brother, Redmond (Carol Ann) MacDougall; father in-law, Michael MacIsaac; sisters in-law, Elaine (Cecil) Langer and Ann Frances MacIsaac. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Ells, Cailin, Stephen, Jennie, Redmond, Jake, Jillian, Michael and Michelle.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his mother in-law, Eileen MacIsaac, brothers in-law, Gregory MacIsaac and Curtis MacNeil.
Funeral mass to celebrate the life of John Alan ‘Books’ MacDougall will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served at the Pier Community Funeral Home in the reception area. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
At this time the family would like to give thanks to Dr. Stephen Farrell and the medical staff on the second floor of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital for the care and compassion given to John during his time of need.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
