RAPHAEL KINES

RAPHAEL KINES

Passed on: December 22nd, 2012

In the early hours of December 22, Robert Kines left this world to join his wife Olive in heaven. Robert had recently undergone successful thoracic surgery, however sometimes the desire of the individual exceeds the power of medicine to heal. Robert was ready to move on and mentioned this to his family on several occasions over the past months. Following valiant attempts to address his post-operative issues, the family directed that Robert be allowed to pass peacefully and with dignity in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit of the Regina General Hospital. Raphael Robert Kines was born in Ceylon, Saskatchewan on May 7, 1927, the sixth of eight children of Robert Montgomery Kines and Gertrude Felicia Gordon. The Kines’ operated the local general store where people came from miles around to meet and socialize. Robert was interested in sports, but hockey was his favorite activity and goal-tending his preferred position. As a young man, Robert left Ceylon for British Columbia where he worked in a mill in Ocean Falls. There were always good stories to hear of the BC escapades of Robert and his friends. Robert returned to Ceylon where he soon met a pretty and popular girl from Radville, Olive Fradette. Robert’s escapades as a single man were over! He and Olive were married in Radville on May 15, 1951. The Kines’ lived in Radville and Edmonton before settling in Moose Jaw in 1968. Together, they had five children Richard, Dwight, Brian, and twins Ken and Kindra. Robert worked as long-haul trucker, covering many miles throughout Canada and the United States. He also worked in construction before suffering a back injury and having to change careers. In 1972, Robert went back to school and completed his GED. He then went to work for SGI where he was employed until his retirement following cardiac surgery in 1989. Following his surgery and although he chose to retire, Robert continued to be active and healthy until his passing. He and Olive made many road trips to visit children and relatives throughout western Canada including Edmonton, Calgary, Enderby, Squamish, and Vancouver. Robert also worked with Olive in her drapery company, Simcoe Draperies, doing installments and other “gopher” activities. Olive’s passing in 2009 was difficult for Robert, but he continued remain positive and stay active. He focused his attention on his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, spending time in Calgary and Palm Springs with Rick and Diane, Puerto Vallarta Mexico with Brian and Mona, at Buffalo Pound Lake with Ken and Natalie, and Squamish BC with Kindra. He also spent time with Dwight in Moose Jaw when on several occasions Dwight rode his motorcycle from Barriere BC to spend time with his dad. The family also taught Robert how to Skype, which he loved as he could both talk to and see his family on a regular basis. We never did correct his tendency to think someone had called him when they showed up on line, which always resulted in a Skype call with Robert saying “did you just call me?” This past summer Robert celebrated his 85th birthday with a wonderful party at his home on a beautiful summer day. In the fall, Robert made the decision to leave his house and move into an apartment where he resided until his death. Robert is predeceased by his wife Olive (nee Fradette), parents Robert and Felicia Kines (nee Gordon), brothers Father Del Kines OMI, and Gordon Kines; and sister Margaret Cummings.
