Wilfred Samuel Gilmet

Wilfred passed away peacefully at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay on Jan. 13, 2013.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the eldest son of the late Victor and Grace (Miller) Gilmet of Lower Main Street. He was also a resident of Duncan Street in Glace Bay for 70 years and was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church.
Wilfred worked as a coalminer at various collieries for almost 50 years. As a young lad, he delivered groceries for the British Canadian Co-op.
Da was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, and fish from the age of eight, continuing to hunt until the age of 88, with his son-in-law, Tony Barrett. He was a constant fixture on the harbour front all of his life. He could be seen strolling on Bell Street on any given day keeping a watchful eye on the local fisherman’s boats.
Wilfred is survived by daughters, Valerie Matheson, Judy (Billy) Wilson, Wanda Chisholm (Doug), Cindi (Tony) Barrett; sons, Randy, Victor; and sister, Joyce MacDonald (Robert), Winnipeg. Also surviving are granddaughters, Micki Murphy, Krista Vigneault, Jade Gillis, Jody Wilson, Karla Danyluk and Josie, Lauren and Victoria Barrett; three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Sam, Jack; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Josie (Budge) and second wife, Mary MacVarish, siblings, Rose Kinslow, Alma Moore, Eva Poirier, Shirley Aucoin, Joan Moore and Dorothy, in infancy, brothers, Roy, William and Gordon. Also he was predeceased by son-in-law, Owen Matheson.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
There will be a private family service at a later date.
Memorial donations in Wilfred’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
