Jean Hester Crossman (nee Steeves) B.T. B.A. B.Ed. M.Ed.
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Crossman on January 2 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa. She was admitted to hospital after she fell and fractured her femur on Dec 27 at her residence, Prince of Wales Manor in Nepean. Special thanks to Dr. Brown, nurses and staff @ 3-D for their care and compassion. Jean spent most of her life in New Brunswick having resided in Moncton, Miramichi and Fredericton. After a career that spanned four decades she retired from teaching in 1986. Jean was a patient and passionate teacher who shaped the the minds and lives of many children in both Albert and Northumberland Counties. She loved to cook, garden, make quilts and visit with her family and friends. In 2006 Jean moved to Ottawa. She wintered in Largo, Florida which she thoroughly enjoyed until 2010. Born in Hillsboro, NB, Jean was the daughter of the late Edward (Ned) and the late Bessie (nee Blake) Steeves. She was pre-deceased by her two younger sisters, Connie and Elva and her older siblings Guy, Halton, and Patricia. Jean has been widowed for the past 35 years when her husband Lorne died suddenly in 1978. Tragically she was predeceased by three of her children: Steven and Debbie were killed in a highway accident at Acadieville Siding NB in 1975 and her daughter Christine lost a courageous battle with cancer in 1999. She is survived by her eldest son “Bert” Albert (Judith A’Hearn-Crossman) of Largo, FL and Elmira, NY, granddaughters Stephanie and Melanie Crossman both of Nepean,ON, granddaughter Rachael Hickey (Chuck Hickey) and great-grandson Christopher Crossman of Moncton, NB and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She also had a special bond with Diane and Jim Freudenberg and family of Largo, FL who “adopted” each other Jean’s first year in Florida. Jean was a kind, generous and loving woman who always had an amazing smile, never complained, and survived some incredible journeys in life right to the very end. We will always love you Mum- Grammy-Aunt Jean! Cremation was under the direction of McEvoy-Shields, Ottawa. At the family’s request, there will be no memorial service in Ottawa, however, services to celebrate Jean’s life are planned for both Largo, FL and Moncton, NB in the spring.
