Mary (Kolanko) Mac Lean

Born In: Whitney Pier

Passed on: January 24th, 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother Mary Josephine (Kolanko) Mac Lean of Sydney River, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, surrounded by her sons and family.
She was the daughter of the late Michael and Francesca (Nicol) Kolanko of Whitney Pier.
Mary loved her summers at the bungalow in Big Pond, surrounded by her family especially during the weekend gatherings where she enjoyed swimming and boating. For the past 65 years, Mary and her ‘ladies club’ gathered weekly to play cards and socialize.
She is survived by her five sons and their wives, Ronald and Claire MacLean, Sydney Forks, David and Marie MacLean, Howie Centre, Douglas and Pamela MacLean, Bedford, Joseph and Tammy MacLean, Sydney River, Michael and Christina MacLean, Coxheath; and her longtime companion, Harvey Morris, East Bay. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Jody MacLean (Mike Morrison), Sydney Forks, Cara Mac Lean (Richard Guy), Hubbards, Krista (Mark) Billard, Leanne Mac Lean and Daniel (Alicia) MacLean, all of Howie Centre, Angela Mac Lean (Tyler Inwood) Kitchener, Andrew MacLean, Sackville, Jeffrey MacLean, Calgary, Sarah and Janna MacLean, Sydney River, and Norah MacLean, Coxheath. Also surviving are her seven great-grandchildren who loved Nanny dearly, Anna and Rebecca Morrison, Sydney Forks, Zachary and Maria MacLean-Guy, Hubbards, Alexa and Julia Billard and Mitchell Mac Lean all of Howie Centre. Siblings are Blanche Chisholm (Leo Mombourquette), Ben Eoin, Annie Ingles, Weston, Ont., and Joseph and Cam Kolanko, Etobicoke; and her sister-in-law, Eileen Mac Lean (late Alex), Sydney.
Besides her husband, Harry M. MacLean and her parents, Mary was predeceased by siblings, Nellie Sobestski, Frances, Walter, Tony and John ( in infancy) Kolanko.
Mary was cherished by her friends and caregivers who made her days over the past four months much easier. Special thanks to Dr. Greg Myatt and his nurse, Janice who cared for her as if she were their own mother.
Visitation will be today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima on Saturday, Jan. 26 with Rev. D. Devereaux officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made in Mary's honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
