Sister Marilyn Curry, formerly Sister Mary Euphrasia, 84, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 in the 49th year of her religious life.
Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Charles Leo and Margaret (MacDonald) Curry and step-daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Curry.
Sr. Marilyn entered the Sisters of St. Martha on February 15, 1959, and pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1961, and her perpetual vows on August 15, 1966. Before entering the congregation, she graduated from the O’Sullivan Business College of Montreal with a diploma in secretarial studies, and had several years experience in business and executive positions in Montreal, QC, Boston, MA, and Sudbury, ON. During her religious life, Sister Marilyn graduated with her B.A. from St. Francis Xavier University in 1975, and in 1979, she received a diploma in Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design.
Sister Marilyn served in various secretarial and office management positions during her years in ministry. In Eastern Canada, Sister served at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, St. Rita Hospital in Sydney, St. Martha’s Hospital and Bethany in Antigonish, and as secretary to the late Bishop William E. Power, Bishop of Antigonish. She also did volunteer service at St. Francis Xavier University Library. In Ontario, Sister Marilyn served at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Scarborough, and in Western Canada at St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta.
Sr. Marilyn was the youngest child of three from her father’s first marriage, and had 11 half-brothers and sisters. She is survived by half-sisters, Charmayne, Eileen, Rosemary and Florence Ann and by half-brothers, John Michael, Joseph McLaughlin, Arthur Leo, Francis Xavier, Charles Leonard (Chuck), and Ernest Joseph.
She was predeceased by brothers, Charles William and Francis Gerard, and by half-sister, Theresa Murphy.
Sister’s remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in Bethany Chapel.
