Florence Patricia (Prowse) Menees

Passed on: February 2nd, 2013

84, passed away peacefully at her home in Anaheim, California, on Saturday, February 2, 2013, surrounded by her husband of 55 years and her four children. Florence was born on September 2, 1928 in St. John’s. One of five children born to John and Mary Ellen (Reardigan) Prowse, as a girl Florence dreamed of adventures in lands near and far. In 1957, she married US Air Force airman James Menees, whom she met through her work at Pepperell Air Force Base. Florence then travelled the world with her husband and growing family for the next 18 years, making a home in 12 different locations, including most memorably more than 5 years in Spain, a time when she realized her childhood dream of seeing the castles of Spain. A devout Catholic, Florence ensured that her family visited the Vatican and the many shrines and holy sites throughout Europe. Florence was passionately intellectual, with a deep love of art, literature, philosophy, history, science, and nature. Settling in California with her husband and family after James retired from the military, Florence devoted herself to launching her children into adulthood. After her children were grown, she returned to school, completing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Literature from Cal State Fullerton. Florence loved and found inspiration in the beauty of California, enjoying many trips to its mountains, deserts, and beaches. Florence was a dedicated grandmother, writing her grandchildren weekly and traveling frequently around the country to visit them. Florence instilled in her children the love of learning, a passion for new adventures, empathy for others, and the capacity for perseverance. Florence is survived by her husband James; sons: Robert and Thomas and their wives Nancy and Sonja; daughters: Mary and Susan; and grandchildren: Sydney, Tanner, Ella, Eric, Emma, and James. She is survived as well by her brother Bill (Frances); her sister Pauline Manning; brothers-in-law: Joe Ryan and Bob Furlong and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters: Frances Ryan and Catherine Furlong, as well as her brother-in-law Edward Manning. She will be greatly missed by her family near and far. A memorial service was held at Hilgenfeld Mortuary in Anaheim on February 8, followed by a private burial service.
