Victor Pye, age 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at the An Cala Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Herbert and Hannah (Antle) Pye.
Victor had a full life; as a young man, he sailed with the merchant marines for 10 years travelling the world, spending his 16th birthday in England. He also served with the Canadian Army where he participated in the liberation of the Netherlands before returning to Cape Breton and having a family. He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corporation until his retirement.
Victor felt a duty to help others often assisting his large extended family when they were in need. He did this even in his last days. He enjoyed the outdoors fishing, hunting, camping and especially swimming with his children. He loved teasing and was known as a prankster, enjoying a good laugh. He played a mean game of crib, debating politics and had a repertoire of songs which he would croon to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Victor is survived by his children, Ann (Lorne Hicks), Sydney Mines, Brenda, George’s River, Kenneth, Sydney Mines, Lorraine (Craig Varnes), North Sydney, James (Marion), Oxted, England, Ruby, Inverness, Raymond, Halifax, Glen (Suzanne), Ottawa, and Rosalie (Paul Peterson), Eastern Passage; and Ruby the mother of their children; 14 grandchildren, LeeAnn, Melanie, Jason, Ashley, Karen, Bryan, Avery, Shealyn, Christine, Hannah, Aidan, Dylan, Wade and Jaidyn; also by six great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Maliya, Sophia, Gavin, Laila and Macie. Also surviving are brother, Charles, Sydney; sisters, Annie Snow, Alleine Dove, Sarahbelle, all of Sydney Mines, and Jean (Ian) Gillan, Ontario.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his daughter, Willena, in infancy, brothers, John, Fred, Leonard, Elijah, Ananias and Clarence.
Visitation for the late Victor Pye will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines,on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, from 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating.A reception will be held in the Royal Canadian Legion Sydney Mines following the service.
