It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our father and grandfather in his ninety-ninth year in the early morning of Saturday Feb. 9, 2013, at the Northside Community Guest Home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Alder Point on Oct. 15, 1913, he was the son of the late Albert and Mary (Martin) Devoe. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Walter worked in Princess Colliery and for the Town of Sydney Mines. He was a member of the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club and Branch 8 Royal Canadian Legion, Sydney Mines. He was a member of Immaculate Conception parish.
Walter is survived by daughters, Patricia, Natick, Mass., Diane (Donnie) Popovich, Mission, B.C., Michelle (Louis) Ferguson, Sydney Mines, Lynn, St. Catharines, Ont.; sons, Gerard, Port Colborne, Ont., Colin (Margaret) Sydney Mines, Blair, Grand Prairie, Alta. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ (Brogan) and his second wife, Mary (Collier) (McKenna), sons, Walter, Brian, Kevin, Paul, daughters, Yvonne, Lori and Elizabeth in infancy, brothers, John, George, Chester, Seaward, Raymond, Brooks and Dan, sisters, Martha, Catherine, Ella, Bertha, Ruth and Winnie.
Walter will also be missed by Mary’s children and grandchildren.
In keeping with Dad’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr.Thomas John officiating. A reception will be held in the parish hall following the mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.
A very special and heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home, especially Joseph Hall, for the love, care and support during Dad's stay and especially during his final hours. You will never be forgotten.
