July 23, 1928 - Jan. 18, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Lois Elizabeth Moran Murphy. Lois passed away in Montreal from complications of pneumonia. Lois was born in Portage, the daughter of the late Macarius and Elizabeth (Bessie Doyle) Moran. Her father died when she was 3 and the family lived through some very hard times, which made her the strong, independent women she was to become. She went to work in Montreal at the age of 17. There were many of her fellow Islanders there and they had lots of "interesting times" including being thrown out of numerous boarding houses for too much partying. She married Alban Murphy in 1950 and had 5 children: Anne (Bert Tougas), Lorna (Mike Frith), Maureen, Elaine (Robin Winsor), Robert (Eileen Pitman). She was always a source of inspiration to her children, encouraging us to do whatever our hearts were set on. She was a strong advocate of education and despite limited financial means ensured that we all received the education we needed to achieve our dreams. She was a strong role model for her children and never wavered from her strong opinions and strength of character. With the advancing years, she faced each health challenge with optimism and a strong religious belief that she would join her family and friends that had preceded her. She will be sadly missed by her children, her grandchildren, Aislin, Nicholas and Padraic, and her many friends and relatives. A small service was held in Montreal at her place of residence, St. Patrick's Square. Her ashes will be brought to P.E.I. in July and a service held at St. Brigid's Church, Foxley River, in Lot 11 on July 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. A tea will follow in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to come and celebrate her remarkable life. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the St. Brigid's Cemetery Fund or the Lung Association would be appreciated.
