John ‘Red’ MacKinnon died peacefully at his home in Sudbury, MA, Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 following a long illness. He was a renal dialysis patient for nine years.
Red was 76 and the loving husband of Loretta (Hanrahan) MacKinnon for 50 years.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Neil and Margaret (Gillis) MacKinnon. Red worked as a coal miner in New Waterford prior to moving to the United States in 1961, later becoming a United States citizen and moving to Sudbury, MA in 1965. He was employed by the Weston Department of Public Works for 34 years, retiring in 1998. Red enjoyed sports, playing hockey, baseball and softball.
In addition to his wife, Loretta, he leaves his children and their spouses, Roy and Lily MacKinnon of Shrewsbury, MA, Barbara and Stuart Broyles of Flagstaff, AZ and Karen and Robert Greene of Sandwich, MA. He was the brother of Anna Mae Gillis of New Waterford and the grandfather of Connor and Kate Broyles of AZ, and Nolan and Jillian Greene of Sandwich, MA.
Red was preceded in death by his siblings, Daniel MacKinnon, Cassie Campbell and Marie MacKinnon.
A funeral mass will be held (today) Thursday, Jan. 21, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sudbury, MA.
Donations in memory of Red may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
