We are extremely sad to inform you that Gustavo Ruan Jr. has passed away in Miami on Jan. 24, 2013.
Born in Colombia, on Nov. 12, 1959, he was the son of Gustavo Ruan Sr and the late Rebeca Cogollo.
Gustavo lost his mother in a tragic accident when he was just a toddler. He was raised by his uncle and aunt Julio and Alicia Perez. He loved both sides of his family, the Cogollo and the Ruan, and adored his maternal grandmother, Ana Josefa.
At the age of 12, he had to say goodbye to his beloved Colombia to move to Montreal with his father and stepmother. Already a proficient swimmer, he learned how to ski, and honed his skills as a cyclist while delivering newspapers in the steep streets of Montreal.
While in his late teens, he saved enough money to embark on the cycling journey that would take him and his friend Claude around Cape Breton. It is there that he fell in love with the Island and Myrtle. They married and shared 10 years of their lives in Louisbourg.
Gus, as he is known in Cape Breton, first worked at the Fortress, became a professional diver, then was hired by Huntington Laboratories (Ecolab) as a sales representative. This is how he befriended the entire island, one call at a time. In 1995, he married Isabelle and a year later his son Gabriel was born in Glace Bay.
Passionate about work, and eager to discover new horizons, he moved to Montreal, Hamilton and, in 2003, relocated to Florida where he became involved in international business with Unisource, and more recently, Sofidel America.
He loved life, traveling, making new friends.
