ROGER MacDIARMID

Passed on: March 13th, 2013

Roger (Spike) Macdiarmid MMM CD
(CAPT. RET'D)

Roger Wilson Archibald Macdiarmid of Lakeville Corner, NB began his life in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan May 15th, 1940. His death occurred Wednesday, March 13th, 2013 at Pine Grove Nursing Home, his “home away from home” for the past four years, where his life was enriched by the friendship and loving care of the staff. He was courageous in his 12 year battle with Alzheimer Disease but he did not let the disease define him. He “fought the good fight” with dignity and humour and over the years showed compassion for others with dementia, doing whatever he could to support the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick.
Roger was the son of the late Archibald and Irene (Bedford) Macdiarmid and was predeceased by his brother, Bruce Macdiarmid.
He chose the military as a career when he was only 17 and like his father who served in World War II, joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He was proud to be “a gunner” and equally proud to wear the maroon beret of the Canadian Airborne Regiment. He served as a peacekeeper in Cyprus during the war there in 1974, and was later fortunate to serve as Battery Sergeant Major of E Battery Para and as Regimental Sergeant Major of 2 RCHA in Petawawa which was part of the highly-trained Canadian Special Service Force. During this time he also had the honor of being awarded the Military Medal of Merit by the Governor General of Canada. Another highlight of Roger’s career was being chosen to serve for three years as Corps RSM of the Artillery for Canada. He was then commissioned to Captain and served as the Housing Officer at Base Gagetown where he later retired after 38 years of service.
Following retirement from the military, Roger worked for five years with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in Fredericton, NB.
He is survived by his wife, Donna (Wasson) Macdiarmid for whom he was the center of the universe; his son, Scott Macdiarmid of Ontario; stepson, Jack Purves (Gayle) of Maquapit Lake, NB; his daughters, Leslie Macdiarmid of Alberta and Kelly Leroux (Gil) of Ontario; stepdaughter, Pam Purves (Rob Ozwald) of Ontario; the grandchildren he was so proud of, Jake Ozwald, Megan Purves, Kane Macdiarmid and Courtney Purves; his very special sister-in-law, Gail Macdiarmid; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service took place 2:00PM, Monday, March 18th, 2013 from the Sheffield United Church, 2169, Route 105, Sheffield, NB. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of NB (Walk for Memories 2013) or Pine Grove Nursing Home. www.hoggfunerals.ca
