J. Walter Grant

Grant, J. Walter – 77, Bayhead (Tatamagouche), passed away March 27, 2013 in Tatamagouche. Born in Union Station, Colchester County, he was the son of the late Roy L. and Annie L. (Henderson) Grant. Walter worked for a short time with the CNR but was best known for the times he operated the Irving station in Malagash from 1961 to 1974 and for operating his own small engine repair and sales business, Sunrise Trail Sales and Service, on Main Street in Tatamagouche. He was active in the community, especially with the Tatamagouche Fire Department which he joined in 1962, and at one time served as Fire Chief, and was involved in the organizing to build the North Shore Recreational Centre. He loved snowmobiling and was a founding member of the North Shore Snowmobile Club. He was an avid race car fan, following the Pro Stock Tour and NASCAR, and was fortunate to attend a NASCAR event in New Hampshire. Surviving is his wife of 59 years, the former Frances A. Mingo; daughters, Donna Yuill; Betty (Dan) MacEachern; Joy (Rodney) Reid; Sandra (Rick) Hillier; Sherry (Eric) McDonald; grandchildren, Jennifer (Joel) Wright, Tracy (Jarrett) Atkin, Kim (Trevor) Irvine, Kathryn (Ryan Graves) Yuill, Denise (Mike Turner) MacEachern, Jason MacEachern, Stephanie MacEachern, Krista (Chris) Dease, Dana Reid, Holly Reid, Vikki (Shawn) MacLaughlin, Ian (Ellen) Hillier, Ryan Hillier, Megan McDonald and Kailee McDonald; 14 great grandchildren; brothers, Dexter, Harry (Bea); sister, Leona Lunney; half-brother, Eldon; step-mother, Jessie. He was predeceased by son-in-law, Ralph Yuill; great granddaughter, Leni Hillier; sister-in-law, Marguerite Grant. Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche (657-3288). Funeral service will be 2 p.m. today, in Sedgwick Memorial Presbyterian Church, Tatamagouche, Rev. Mary Anne Grant officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Lockerby Memorial Cemetery, Tatamagouche. Family flowers only. Memorial donations to the Tatamagouche Fire Department or any charity would be appreciated.
