Austin 'Bud' Gallivan
Born In: Sydney
Passed on: April 14th, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather Samuel Austin ‘Bud’ Gallivan, of Whitney Pier, Sydney.
After a brief illness, he passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the Palliative Care Unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Thomas and Eva (Fougere) Gallivan.
Bud was a member of Holy Redeemer parish. He was employed with the Dominion Coal Company and later Devco at the International Piers for 41 years. He was very active with Local 7749 of the United Mine Workers of America and served on many local committees as well as the executive positions of recording and financial secretary which he held for over 20 years.
He was born, raised, lived, worked, and would say he did it all in the Pier, except when he was in the Cape Breton Highlands where he spent endless summers camping and sharing his love with his family and friends.
Bud was a self-taught painter, it was his true passion “If I like it, I paint it” he would say and it was these artistic talents and a good sense of humour that gave him an opportunity to create political cartoons for “The Highlander” for a number of years. The artistic accomplishment of which he was most honoured by was when he was asked to exhibit his work as the featured artist at the first Pierscape Festival of the Arts in Whitney Pier.
Anyone that knew him would remember his child like love of the Christmas season; nothing made him happier than the smells and sounds of Christmas which came hand in hand with his love of Charles Dickens works, specifically “A Christmas Carol”.
Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Anna Maria (Franssens); sons, Dr. Glenn (Cheryl), Antigonish, Kelly, Sydney, and Tim (Michelle), Sydney; five grandchildren whom he adored, Emma, Jane, Kate, Jack and Ryan; brother, Pat (Mary), Sydney; special nephew, Gary (Debbie) Sydney and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by infant son, Thomas.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Jim MacKillop and Dr. John Ritter, for their exemplary care and consideration provided to our father in the past and through his recent illness. As well, thank you to the nurses of 4A, 4C and the Palliative Care Unit for their gentle care and kindness, which allowed our father to pass with peace and dignity. A special thank you to all of our friends and family for their support during this time.
There will be no visitation, but please join us for a mass of celebration which will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Palliative Care unit of the Cape Breton District Health Authority.
