Mary Margaret Kavanagh

Passed on: April 13th, 2013

Passed peacefully away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Hoyles-Escasoni Home, Mary Kavanagh, aged 76 years. Born in St. John’s on April 29, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Florence Kavanagh. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her brothers: William Kavanagh and Edward Kavanagh and sisters: Edna (Malecka), Margaret (Madigan), Irene (Forbes) and Joan (Zupsan). Mary had a true zest for life, and despite a medical diagnosis as a child that would not expect her to survive into her teens, Mary overcame the odds and persevered, remaining ceaselessly optimistic. Anyone who knew Mary knew that she was an incredibly spirited, kindhearted and caring person. She dedicated most of her life towards caring for her beloved mother, Florence Kavanagh, who passed in 2003 at the age of 106. Mary loved playing cards with her friends at Hoyles as well as playing the accordion and listening to her radio. She especially loved just talking to and getting to know people; she will be very missed by so many. She leaves to mourn her loving family and friends: brothers: Gerald Kavanagh and his wife Katherine, Pennsylvania, Errol Kavanagh and his wife Suzanne, California, and John Kavanagh and his wife Judy, Minnesota, and special friend Phyllis Piearcey (nee Hodder), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a large circle of extended family and friends. The family would like to thank Phyllis Piearcy for her unconditional love, friendship and support of Mary over the years. They would also like to acknowledge the nurses and staff at Hoyles Home for their kind and compassionate care. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, on Friday, April 19, from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm. Funeral service will take place from St. Patrick’s Parish on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 9:30 a.m., with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers gratefully accepted. To sign the online memorial guestbook, please visit www.barretts.ca.
