It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our aunt, greataunt, great-greataunt, sister-in-law and friend, Mabel Katherine MacKenzie on April 21, 2013. She passed away peacefully at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Mabel was born Nov. 19, 1918, in Middle River, and was the daughter of the late Murdock and Agnes (MacLennan) MacKenzie.
She was a member of the Middle River Farquharson Memorial Presbyterian Church, Middle River Historical Society and the Middle River Seniors Club.
She was a dedicated school teacher for over 35 years, having taught in different schools in Cape Breton including, Hazeldale, Church Section and West Side Middle River. She also taught in Boularderie and was the principal there until her retirement in 1980.
After her retirement, she moved to her new home in West Middle River where she lived for the remainder of her life.
Mabel had a great interest in reading, attending to her flower garden and a great love for cats (many she provided a good home for). She was also very interested in genealogy, the history of Middle River and the people that lived there.
Mabel enjoyed the company of others and had many good friends. All of whom she was sure to make feel welcome in her home. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. As well, she will be greatly missed by Helen Shalit, Anna Jeffrey and Nancy Carmichael.
Mabel was predeceased by her parents, brothers, John ‘Jack’ and Danny, sister, Ruth Campbell, nephew, Paul and grandniece, Lexie.
She is survived by nephews, Murdock (Signe), Gordon, Jim (June); sister-in-law, Sadie; grandnieces, Sheila, Lisa, Elaine, Emma, Kendra, Signe Krista and Allison; grandnephews, Jeffrey, Paul and Nels; great-grandnephews, Drew, Keigan and Reid; great-grandnieces, Kenly, Isabelle, Ria and Avery.
The family would like to express a special heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, nurses, paramedics and staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Visitation for Mabel MacKenzie will take place Wednesday, April 24 at MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral will be held Thursday, April 25 at Farquharson Memorial Presbyterian Church, Middle River, at 11 a.m. A reception to follow at the Middle River Community Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Middle River Cemetery Fund or a charity of your choice.
We were blessed to have Mabel in our lives as she touched all our lives in so many ways. Rest in peace dear one — we will always remember you.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck.
