T.A. ‘Terry’ MacDonald passed away April 27, 2013, peacefully with his wife and family by his side.
Terry was the son of Mrs. Margaret I. (MacKenzie) and the late Graham H. MacDonald of Sydney River.
Besides his mother, Terry is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Louise (MacDonald/Mumford) MacDonald and children, Robin (Brian) Dodd, Surrey, B.C., Sean (Holly) MacDonald, Kanata, Ont.; stepchildren, Harold Mumford, Sudbury, Ont., Sharon Mumford (Denis) Aurora, Ont., and Scott Mumford (Rebecca), Grand Prairie, Alta. Terry is also survived by nine grandchildren, Connor Mumford, Ontario, Brandon MacDonald-Menard, Bradley Dodd and Kyle Dodd, B.C., Keira Mumford, Ontario, Jessica Mumford, Colin Mumford and Jerimiah Mumford, Alberta, Matthew MacDonald, Ontario; sister, Marilyn (late Bert) Campbell, Sydney River. Terry is also survived by the mother of his children, Paulette MacDonald, Ontario, as well as nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, Terry was predeceased by daughter, Sherry-Lynn (at birth), brothers, Benjamin ‘Benny’ in 1967, Ross (in infancy), a baby brother at birth and brother-in-law, Bert Campbell.
Terry was a 17-year member of the SSW Kinsmen Club (now Sydney River and area) and held most club executive positions including president in 1983-84. He was elected to the District Council as Deputy Governor (Zone 3) in 1984-85, and during that term two new Kinsmen Clubs, a Kinette club and a K-40 club were created. He was awarded a Life Membership in the Kinsmen Association for his efforts. Terry also served as a two-term president of the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia (C.B. Chapter). Terry worked in his teens as a Cape Breton Post, Star Weekly and Highlander newspaper carrier, while also working at The Joy Supermarket in Sydney River.
After graduation, Terry served as a page in the House of Commons, Halifax for a brief period before working at Municipal Ready Mix and Cape Breton Chrysler before starting his career as an insurance adjuster in 1974 with Marsh Adjustment Bureau, Sydney office, until his retirement in 2013. Terry became a partner in the firm in 1984 and during the last 10 years was the Chairman of the Board of Directors.
He was active in many insurance related organizations, including president of the International Association of Arson Investigators (N.S Chapter).
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday April 30, 2013, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Sydney River United Protestant Church, with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Private family burial will be held at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Palliative Care Unit and a special thank you to Terry’s special angels on 4A.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
