CONRAD HURST MANDIGO
A Beautiful Soul
DECEMBER 20, 1930 - MARCH 6, 2013
Conrad was born in Greenfield Mass., USA, to Canadian parents Walter Hurst Mandigo and Katherine Margaret Mandigo, nee Jones-Robb, and baptized in the Greenfield Methodist Episcopal Church. The family returned to Clarenceville when Conrad (affectionately called Hursty) was four years of age, and there he and his little sister grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Conrad enjoyed an eclectic range of good music but his first love was the organ which he diligently practised after school in the local church. He became an accomplished organist performing in the Townships and in and around the Montreal areas for a time. In his mid-20s he left Quebec for BC where he found work and joined Local 170 of the United Association as an Instrument Calibrator/Fitter. He enjoyed his work, was a UA Proud member, and made long-time friends in this environment. He married, had children, lived life in Surrey and North Delta areas, and was predeceased by his wife of those years in 1993.
Survived now by his wife Rene Mandigo, sister Carolyn Plotke and, from blended families, five children, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, long-time and new friends. He will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered for his warm, gentle and steadfast presence, his engaging smile and wonderful laugh, his regular telephone chats, and his delicious home-made bread, onion soup, ice cream and other good recipes. He will be well remembered too for his quiet determination to live and to enjoy the last years of his life on the Sunshine Coast, his favourite place to be.
Thanks to everyone in the Coastal, Vancouver, and North Vancouver medical communities who aided in the extension and quality of Conrad’s life during these years, with special thanks to Dr. Jack Bryson and Dr. Sara Wadge, who monitored his care from Sechelt. Thanks to family and friends for your exceptional support, your calls, emails, cards, letters, and flowers that were indeed an honour to Conrad.
Conrad, my dearest love, truest guide, better half, and best friend, so bravely dignified to your last awareness, I’ll miss you and cherish you always. R.
