Gopal Maindiratta, 81 of New Waterford, N.S., passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside on May 14, 2013.
Born in India on Nov. 27, 1931, he was the son of the late Inder Bhan and Nihal Devi (nee Kalra) Maindiratta.
Gopal worked as a teacher in different schools in India, Ethiopia and Nova Scotia including Cape Breton and New Waterford for many years. He was a member of the Cape Breton Artists Association during most of his time residing in New Waterford and displayed his art work in many of the association exhibits along with the other artists in Cape Breton. He was a member of the Hindu Sanstha of Nova Scotia and supported the establishment of the first Hindu temple in eastern Canada.
Gopal was an avid traveller and explored many far reaches of the world but in particular was proud of the fact that he had spent much of his time exploring his beloved India and Canada. Gopal was known for being an enthusiastic walker, many years before walking became the fitness craze that it is today. Gopal supported many Cape Breton, Canadian and international charities. During his travels to India he would visit the causes he supported for underprivileged children.
He is survived by his devoted wife of more than 52 years, Shakuntla (Kukreja) and his son, Sanjiv (Raman) of Waterloo, Ont.; along with his daughters, Renu of Milton, Ont., Anita of Waterloo, Ont. and Rajani of Toronto, Ont. He will be lovingly remembered by his granddaughter, Neha and grandsons Ashish and Akash. He is also survived by his loving sister, Santosh Khurana and brother, Ram Prakash; along with many nieces and nephews.
Gopal was predeceased by two sisters, Leela Shastri and Salochna Nagpal. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Madan Lal and Govardhan Lal.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation took place on May 15, 2013 under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced through the funeral home website and in the Cape Breton Post.
