William McWhirter Sears

Sears, William, McWhirter (Bill), 85, Truro, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche with his family by his side. He was born on July 2, 1927 in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia and was the son of the late Max and Lena (McWhirter) Sears. Bill was a teacher and school administrator for 38 years, serving 18 years as vice-principal of Brookfield Junior High School. In his younger years he was a member of the Parrsboro Army Cadets and was an amateur boxer. During this time he never lost a match and won the Maritime Championship between Parrsboro and Moncton in 1947. For 25 years he coached the midget and high school hockey teams in Brookfield. His teams won a total of 18 championships. He was also involved in other sports activities, such as referring soccer and umpiring ball. Bill was always an avid sports fan. In 1997 he was recognized by the Truro Sport Heritage Society when he was named to the honour roll for his years of community service. Bill worked with Air Cadet Squadron 569 Brookfield, serving for many years as the Commanding Officer. He took up golf for the first time at the age of 65. In later years he enjoyed traveling and square dancing with his wife Frances. He is survived by his wife Frances (Russell) Sears; sister, Peggy Brown; sons, William (Susan), Brian (Marlene); grandchildren, Marc and Wendy (Mirek); great grandchildren, Maxwell and Samuel. He was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Sears. The family would like to thank the staff at Willow Lodge for the wonderful care they provided to Bill. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, May 21 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a memorial service to be held on Wednesday, May 22 at 2:00 PM all in the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Gary Yetman officiating. Internment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Willow Lodge Home for Special Care or for Alzheimer’s research.
