Calvin H. Hillier passed away at the Victoria County Memorial on June 5, 2013, with his beloved wife of 53 years at his side.
He was the son of the late Herbert and Mary (Bonnell) Hillier.
Born in Whitney Pier, Calvin resided there until retiring to Skir Dhu 24 Years ago. Calvin worked at Sydney Steel as millwright and shift foreman of his department. On his retirement he devoted himself wholeheartedly to many organizations and community projects as a volunteer. He held many positions in the Navy League of Canada at the branch, provincial and national levels, over a period of 40 years and was presented with life membership award for outstanding service in 1999. In 2007, he was chosen as provincial representative volunteer of the year. For 25 years Calvin was very active and a hard-working member of the North Shore and District Volunteer Fire Department, and held various positions during that time. In 2012 he was given a fire services long service medal. A special part of his life was working as service officer for veterans and their spouses at RCL branch 53 Baddeck. His admiration and respect for veterans was his mandate and helping them in any way was his goal. In 2012, Calvin was awarded the RCL life membership for outstanding service. In 2013 Calvin was presented with the Queens Jubilee Medal. For a period of several years Calvin was chairman of the Victoria County Hospice Association and worked tirelessly for the welfare of the patients.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Clara (Fifield); his brother, George; nephews, Lloyd (Linda), Raymond (Liz), Ronald, Rick Billard, David (Wilma) Noseworthy, Robert Noseworthy; nieces, Janet Billard and Barbara MacCuish (James). His dear sister-in-law, Christine Noseworthy; Aunt Susan Hillier, Newfoundland and sister, Joan Billard.
Visitation will be held at St. Ann’s Bay United Church, Saturday, June 8, to 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with the legion service at 7:30 p.m. A brief graveside farewell will be conducted by Rev. Diane Kempt at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9th in Riverside Cemetery, Shir Dhu.
Memorials may be made to the North Shore District Volunteer Fire Department, Victoria County Hospice Society or charity of your choice.
