Douglas Curry

Douglas M. Curry, 76, Wentworth, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late John and Margaret (Estabrooks) Curry. Doug was educated in Amherst, and worked at Goodwin’s Market as a teenager. He worked at Robb Engineering in Amherst for 43 years. His whole life was geared around sports as a participant with coaching and managing in baseball and hockey. Doug was a life long supporter of hockey at all levels, but mainly the “Midget Bombers”. Doug received the Presidents’ Award from Hockey Nova Scotia and was known as Mr. Hockey in Cumberland County. This past year Doug was honored with a banner from the Cumberland County Minor Hockey Assoc. that hangs in the Amherst Stadium acknowledging his over 50 years of service. He was also presented with CTV Maritimer of the Week award for his work in minor hockey. He loved his involvement with young people of all ages, especially cherishing his time with his own grandchildren. He was their “Pup”. Doug was a member, trustee and on the board of stewards of Wentworth United Church. He was an honourary member of the Amherst and Wentworth Fire Departments. Doug was also a supporter of the Wentworth Recreation Centre and a director of Cumberland County Exhibition. He was a former member of Knights of Pythias Lodge, Amherst and associate member of Royal Canadian Legion, River John. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Patriquin; daughter, Diane Morin, Cornwall, ON; grandchildren, Breanna Curry, Marcia, Stephan and Joel Morin; stepgranddaughter, Alicia Curry; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Isabella, Rilly, and Hawkesley; several nieces and nephews. Sisters, Barbara Gould, Amherst; Diane Fitzgerald, Shediac, NB; Carol Ann Crossman (Bill), Amherst; Linda (Jimmy) Hawkes, Amherst; brothers, John (Diane), London, ON; Wayne (Marilyn), Elmira, ON; Gary (Sharon), London, ON; He was predeceased by his son, Byron in 2011. Arrangements are under the direction of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home, Wentworth (447-2930). Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m., Saturday, June 8, with funeral service at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 9, all in Wentworth United Church.
