Orville Murchison Murray

89, Waverley, passed away peacefully in Veterans' Memorial Hospital on June 9, 2013.
Orville was born in Clyde River, Prince Edward Island to the late Colin and Charlotte Murray. He attended Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, and Dalhousie University. Orville left the farming life of PEI to enlist with the RCNVR for the later part of WWII. Orville was a very dedicated and loyal family man. He met his wife, Ida Gladwin, during WWII, at a youth group at Saint Matthew's United Church, Halifax. They had 6 children and in 1968 he lost his wife to cancer. Orville made many sacrifices in raising his children on his own in Waverley. He was like a Mother and Father to them, always involved in their lives.
Orville was a very kind and selfless man who was always giving advice, helping others or volunteering with community events. He was a Captain of the Waverley Fire Department, Commodore of Cheema Aquatic Club, President and Treasurer of the Waverley Legion (Dieppe 90) and an Elder at St. John's United Church of Fall River.
In the late 70's he married Ellen Carr of Fall River. They enjoyed 29 years of family gatherings, church activities, winters in Florida, summers at their cottage in PEI, travelling across the country, enjoying card games with their friends Clara and Earl James (PEI) and attending paddling regattas on Lake Banook.
Orville worked for the Department of National Defense in Halifax for 35 years. As a hobby he worked the gate at Sackville Downs Horse Racing for over 25 years. He loved the horses and the social interaction from the people of Sackville Downs. Orville was an avid gardener in PEI right up until he was 80 years old. He was very proud to fill his plate up with vegetables from his garden. Orville's favorite dinner was lobster and just last week he enjoyed a lobster barbeque at his son's (Brad) home.
Orville spent his last 4 years at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital where he was well taken care of and was always ready to participate on Veterans' excursions and his weekly outings, to local restaurants, with his family. Orville was very popular and everywhere he went in HRM, someone seemed to know him. He loved talking about the "good old days."
He is survived by his brother, Howard (Florence) Murray, Meadowbank, PEI; 5 sons: Richard (Alberta), Robert (Janine), Amherst; David (Cheryl), Hammonds Plains; Stewart (Florence), Ottawa; Bradley (Elaine), Wellington; and daughter, Anne, Waverley/Malpeque. His stepchildren: Pauline Worton, Debbie (John) Bauld, and Ferne Cutler. Orville loved his grandchildren and was very proud that they all went to university: Gillian, Ryan, Steven, Catherine-Anne, Lindsey, Leah, Cameron and Katie, and step grandchildren. He had 4 great-grandchildren, along with his many nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff of 6th floor, East Wing of Veterans Hospital. They were very professional but yet personal with our father's care.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place Tuesday, June 11, 6:30- 8:30 p.m. at St. John's United Church in Fall River with a service to follow on June 12 at 11 a.m. in the church. The late Orville Murray will rest in Brookside Cemetery, Bedford.
Donations may be made to Cheema Aquatic Club, RC Legion Dieppe #90, Waverley, or St. John's United Church in memory of Orville.
