Bonnie MacMillan

It is with great sadness that the family of Bonnie MacMillan announces her peaceful passing on Sunday, June 9, 2013.
Mom was born in Edmonton, Alberta, May 10, 1923 to the late Dewey and Lillian (Stretton) Waldie. She is survived by her loving children, Heather (Brian) Craig of Rothesay, Neil (Marilyn) MacMillan of Halifax and Ian MacMillan of Halifax; 4 grandchildren, Robyn and Michael Craig, Presley and Stephen MacMillan and 1 brother, Leonard Waldie of Edmonton. She is predeceased by Frank, her loving husband of 49 years; a brother Lloyd and 2 sisters-in-law, Jean (Len) and Joyce (Lloyd).
She was a remarkable woman who led a full life. She had a thirst for knowledge and travel. She attended numerous universities and colleges including UBC, university of Washington in Seattle, the Sorbonne in Paris, UNB, Dalhousie, Saint Mary's and the university in Oaxaca, Mexico. During the process in addition to taking many courses out of interest, she acquired her BA, BEd and MEd. She loved books, reading and passed on knowledge by teaching in P.E.I. and Nova Scotia, primarily at Halifax West High School where she taught History and a course in Chinese, Japanese and Korean History that she had developed through her thesis. She also loved to travel and did so extensively. Not content with experiencing just North America, she traveled to France in the early 50's, saw much of Europe and ended up living in Paris for 5 years before meeting Dad and moving back to Canada. She continued traveling throughout her life especially after retirement in their airstream trailer. This was followed by many happy winters in Mexico and the Florida Keys.
Mom will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Northwood 9 Centre for their kind assistance and care in the past few months.
There will be no visitation as per her request. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayer’s Road. Interment will take place at a future date at Wood Islands Cemetery in P.E.I.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of donor’s choice.
