Paul attended Metropolitan Vocational School in New York, where he spent a term studying marine engineering on board the John W. Brown, a former liberty ship that became a floating division of the school. Many years later he visited his former school campus here in Halifax when the ship was on a tour. He received an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering from Brooklyn Community College. He then went on to City College of New York, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honour society, and where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. He received a Masters in Psychology from Clark University
in Worcestor and a PhD in psychology from New York University. He did research at Belchertown State School in Massachusetts and Creedmore State Hospital in New York. He taught psychology at University of
Connecticut, Towson State University, and Quineboag College. While living in Connecticut, he and his wife Maida started a peace centre
with the local Quaker community protesting the Vietnam War. Moving to Amherst, Nova Scotia in 1980, he had a private practice in counseling until he retired.
In later years, Paul pursued a wide variety of hobbies in the Amherst
area. He became interested in amateur radio, receiving his operating
license and joining the Westcum Amateur Radio Club, of which he is a
past president. In ham radio circles he was known as VE1SS. For a
number of years he was in regular radio contact with people around the world, including a New York teacher/amateur radio operator and class of junior high students. He volunteered at the Mount Allison University
Radio station and contributed a number of technical articles to QST,
the journal of the American Radio Relay League. He was a frequent
contributor of letters to the editor in the Chronicle Herald and Amherst Daily News.
He worked on a number of other writing projects, including poetry, reminiscences, and editing a book of his mother's numerous poems. He was voracious reader, regular library user, and had been a member of
the Cumberland County Art Association. From 1980 to 2005, his six-mile runs several times a week made him a recognizable figure to many, first on the highway in Amherst Head and then in the streets of Amherst. He was a participant in the Terry Fox Run throughout the 1980s.
Paul had resided in Cole Harbour since 2008. He is survived by his wife
Maida Follini of Cole Harbour, daughter Beth Follini (Dave Cliff) of
