June 28, 2013
Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, June 28, 2013, Philip Augustus Cheeseman of St. John’s, age 77 years. Son of Philip Cheeseman of Rushoon and Rita Sullivan of Brent’s Cove. Husband of Mary (English); father of Catherine (Larry Naugle) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Janet (Donald Battcock) of Holyrood and John of St. John’s; grandfather of beloved Juliet Aoife Battcock; brother to Selena (Bruce Chislett), Mary (Wim Tjepkema) and Patrick Roche. Philip lived with diabetes for several decades and in recent years fought a difficult battle for control of the illness and its many complications. A debt of gratitude is owed to the staff of the HSC Dialysis Unit and Cardiac Care Unit for their excellent care. His social worker and friend at the Dialysis Unit, Gertie Duggan, provided great comfort and support to him. Philip loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and camping. He also loved music, his tastes ranging from Hank Snow to virtuoso classical guitarist, Andres Segovia. He had a 40 year career with the St. John's Transportation Commission as a driver and diesel mechanic. His family remembers much fun and laughter with him as he was known for his wit and sense of humor. Philip also was a deep thinker and his sharing of ideas and thoughts with others offered interesting and provocative conversations. His urn placement took place on Friday, July 12th, 2013, at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, St. John’s. He is laid to rest in a family plot with his parents. May they all rest in peace.

“Old friends pass away,
new friends appear.
It is just like the days.
An old day passes, a new day arrives.
The important thing is to make it
meaningful: a meaningful friend -
or a meaningful day.”
Dalai Lama
