Downie, Isabella Swindale - Peacefully at the Loch Lomond Villa “The Village,” Saint John NB on July 20, 2013, Isabella Swindale (McDonald) Downie wife of Rev. Peter Downie of Saint John NB. Born at Kirkcaldy, Scotland on December 31, 1929, to the late Thomas and Mary (Gemmell) McDonald, she was the eldest of four sisters. In addition to her husband she is survived by her four children, Margaret (Gordon) Warren of PEI, Elizabeth Kneabone of Blacks Harbour NB, Gavin Downie of Alberta and Catrina (Steven) Lee of Alberta and eight grandchildren, Jessica, Andrew, Emily, Belinda, Marin, Heath, Thomas and Nicholas and four great grandchildren, one sister, Jean Barraclough of Scotland and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sisters, Elizabeth McDonald-DeBariga and Maisie Conway. Isabella spent over 40 years in her chosen career of Nursing. She earned her RN and Midwife Certifcate in Scotland and earned her BA from UNB. She nursed at numerous institutions in NB, PEI and NS including the Saint John General Hospital and Saint John Regional Hospital where she was Evening Supervisor. Upon leaving there, she became Director of Nursing at the Fundy Hospital, Blacks Harbour NB. Isabella was a minister’s wife and was involved with many aspects of various church functions, such as doing crafts, teaching Sunday School and Missionery Work. She and her family relocated several times, coming to Grandbay in 1964, Blacks Harbour NB, Hazelbrook PEI and West Chester Station NS. She was very creative and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and tatting. She also was musical and loved singing and was member of the Run of The Mill Singers and the Funtones in Nova Scotia.
In keeping with Isabella’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A service will be held at Calvary Atlantic Baptist Church, Blacks Harbour NB on Wednesday at 2:00 pm with Rev. Reg Ward officiating. In Isabella’s memory, donations to the Calvary Atlantic Baptist Church Building Fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreicated by the family.
