Hazel Laurette Brown

Hazel Laurette (Ward) Brown, peacefully passed onto "a better place" at High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, on July 5, 2013 in her 92nd year.
Born in Springhill and raised in a family of 11 siblings, and upon finishing High School, Hazel worked as a telephone operator in the Springhill telephone office during the "number please" days. She was a member of St. Andrews-Wesley United Church and the United Church Women group. A long time and dedicated member of Pythian Star Temple # 8 in Springhill, she rose through the ranks achieving international status in the position of Page in their Supreme Temple. She was an Honourary Member, and Past Regent of Cobequid Chapter IODE. Always a Mum first, but over the years Hazel enjoyed entertaining friends, cooking, sewing, chatting on the telephone, and summers at the family's West Pugwash cottage alongside "the Bagnells next door."
Hazel is survived by 2 daughters, Barbara (late Michael) Moore, and Sidney Myatt; 2 grandchildren, Andrew (Bonnie) Moore and Valerie (Daryl) MacLeod; 5 great grandchildren, Emily, Meaghan, Seamus and Anna Moore and Gabriella Myatt. Also surviving are her sisters, Doris "Dot" (late Bob) Howard, Candace (Morley) Brown and brother, Keith (Beverly) Ward, as well as sisters-in-law Olwyn (late Ken) Keir, Ruth (late Carl) Merlin, Marilyn (late Fred) Ward and brother-in-law, Winfield Brown.
She was predeceased by her parents, Vincent A. and Laura E. (Sterling) Ward, and by her husband of 52 years, Horace G. Brown. Also, by brothers, George "Jack" (late Kathryn), Harry (late Leona), Victor "Dick" (late Evelyn) and Fred; by sisters, Anne (late Fred) MacLean, Hilda (late Harry) Hunter and June (late Norman) Adams.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361). A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at St. Andrews-Wesley United Church, Springhill, followed immediately at 2:30 pm by the Funeral Service with The Reverend Wayne McCarther officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, NS.
