Stanley Cairns

CAIRNS, STANLEY LLOYD -Stanley Lloyd Cairns, 87, of Herring Cove, passed away suddenly on September 5, 2013, at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building. Stan was born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1926, the youngest son of Irene and DeWitt Cairns. He loved music and played the clarinet, recorder and guitar. As a young eighteen-year-old officer in the Canadian Merchant Marine, Stan served as a radio operator aboard the Rocky Mountain Park from 1944-46, where he made 4 trips to West and South Africa. After the Second World War he returned to civilian life and then in 1951, he married the love of his life, Ruth. He began his career as a radio operator for the Department of Transportation where he had a successful career for 35 years, retiring in 1983, as Operation Supervisor for Halifax Marine Radio in Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia. He will be remembered in his neighborhood for his long walks taken with his Samoyed Husky dogs. Stanley is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Cairns (Amirault), Herring Cove; four sons, Martin Cairns and his wife Diane (Judge), Halifax, Paul Cairns, Toronto, Chris Cairns and his wife Christine (MacDonald), Herring Cove; Mitchell Cairns, Portuguese Cove; two sisters, Frances Kilcup, Saint John, New Brunswick, and Connie (George) Polley, Quispamsis, New Brunswick; three grandchildren, Emily Cairns, Herring Cove, Kathleen Cairns, Halifax, and Laura Cairns, Herring Cove; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Irene and father DeWitt, sister Doris and brother DeWitt. Stanley lived with Alzheimer's disease for the past seventeen years of his life. His loving wife Ruth cared for him at her home. He lived the last 3 years at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building where he enjoyed a renewed love for music and singing and visiting the gardens. Thank-you to the wonderful staff of the 6th floor for their love and care.
Visitation will be 2:00 until 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 8 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00am on Monday, September 9, at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Herring Cove. Burial will follow in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville.
