SMITH: Elaine Suzanne Smith (nee Ruf) was born May 6, 1963 in Swift Current, SK. Elaine passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013 at the age of 50 years, following a courageous struggle with a lengthy illness. Elaine passed away peacefully at the Agapé Hospice in Calgary, AB. Elaine has left a lasting imprint that has created cherished memories and touched the lives of many people who had the privilege of knowing this special lady. Elaine was born and raised in Swift Current. She completed Grade 12 at Swift Current Comprehensive High School in 1981. She became involved in health care in Swift Current Palliser Hospital, Saskatoon Veterans Home, and the Lethbridge Southland Nursing Home. She married Verdell Wall in 1989. Elaine went into semi-retirement following the birth of their daughter, Neesha, in 1999. After the death of Verdell in 2001, Elaine and Neesha moved to the Calgary area and lived in Airdrie for the next few years. She met and married Mike Smith and had a second child Nathan Charles in January 2003. During this time Elaine worked at various jobs. She worked in sales for Women in Need and most recently was employed by Costco. By 2011 her health began to fail progressively, particularly after the death of her father (Karl Ruf) in 2012. For the past year and a half she was no longer able to work due to sickness and was at home with a chronic debilitating disease spending most of her time in hospital from mid-May 2013 until the time of her death in the Agapé Hospice on August 23, 2013. She enjoyed working as a caregiver for many years. She was a self-taught knitter completing afghans, baby blankets, etc., as well as doing pieces of cross stitch. The job she liked best was a stay-at-home mother, her children were her life. She had a keen sense of humor which helped her to survive some of the tough times of her life. She had a strong faith, in her last days she looked to the end of her life's earthly journey and the promise of Eternal Life. She also looked forward to being with her dad. Elaine is survived by her daughter Neesha; her son Nathan; her loving mother Lorna Ruf (nee Gavel); her brother Robert, his wife Carol, and their son Jeremy; her second husband Michael Smith; her uncle Herb; her two aunts Joyce and Antolena as well numerous Ruf and Gavel cousins and many friends. Elaine was predeceased by her first husband Verdell Wall and her father Karl Ruf. A Memorial service was held at St. Olaf's Lutheran Church in Swift Current, SK (665 Central Ave N.) on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Kiel officiating.
