ANDREW, DOUGLAS - Douglas Haig Andrews, age 95, of Long Reach, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2013, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Doug, as he was known to friends was born February 26, 1918 at Long Reach, NB, the fourth and youngest child of George and Ella (Holder) Andrews. He attended school at Long Reach, Kingston and Saint John. At the age of sixteen he joined the New Brunswick Rangers, a Militia Regiment in which he had achieved the Rank of Sargeant by 1939 as well as continuing his education in pharmacy while working full time. When war broke out in 1939, he joined the Carleton and York Regiment and was promptly shipped from Halifax to England to participate in the war effort. He had attained the rank of Acting Captain when, in late December 1943, he was wounded at the Battle of Ortona in the Italian Campaign. Doug married Edith Olive, of Saint John in 1948 while studying for his Bachelor of Science Degree at Dalhousie University. By the time he had received his PhD. in Organic Chemistry at McGill University he and Edith had gained two children; daughter Charlotte born in 1950 and son Peter born in 1953. He was employed with the Canadian Industries Limited as a Research Chemist and subsequently as Research Group Leader in the field of Pulp and Paper and was recognized internationally as an expert in the pulp bleaching process. He was recognized, post retirement, in 1994 with the prestigious John S. Bates Gold Medal, an industry award for excellence. Following his retirement he devoted his time to his beloved wife, his garden, his granddaughters, and his studies of local history as well as serving his community by his participation in the Anglican Parish of Kingston. He was predeceased by his wife Edith in their 65th year of marriage. Predeceased also by his sisters; Frances Gough and Dorothy Niles, as well as brother Lawrence (Bud). He is survived by his son, daughter-in-law and daughter, four granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.
He is resting at Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, with visiting on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Funeral service conducted by, The Rev. J. Peter Gillies, will be held from St. James Anglican Church at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Interment will take place in St. James Cemetery. Donations to the St. James Anglican Church, Long Reach Building Fund or to the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
