Sr. George Marie MacPherson, 97, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013. She was in the 76th year of religious life.
Born to William Martin and Annie (Gillis) MacPherson in Big Pond, Nova Scotia, Sr, George Marie was the oldest of 10 children.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Murphy, Dorothy Pennylegion and Eunis MacInnis; brothers, William, Hector, George and Duncan.
She is survived by a sister Marie MacEachern and a brother Joseph.
Sister George Marie entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in September, 1936. She pronounced her first vows in 1938, and made perpetual commitment in 1942. Sister studied arts and crafts at colleges in Detroit, Boston, and Halifax. She obtained her licence to teach arts and crafts from the Nova Scotia Department of Education. In 1953, she graduated with her teaching licence (first class) from the Provincial Normal College, Truro, and continued to raise her licence at summer schools to T.C. 6 as a reading specialist. Sister also spent a year assisting in the Catholic charities office in Sydney in 1941.
Sr. George Marie taught school for 32 years in Cape Breton at Eskasoni, East Bay, Ingonish, Main-a-Dieu, Bay St. Lawrence and Bras d’Or; also in St. Andrews, Antigonish Co. She was local leader of the sisters in two of the houses in which she lived. After retiring from teaching, in 1981, she became involved in Parish Pastoral Ministry. She served in this capacity at St. Stephen’s parish, Florence, N.S. for 27 years. Sister moved to Bethany in 2008.
Sr. George Marie was a woman with many gifts and talents. These qualities were generously shared with others, especially those who lived on the margins of life.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held that same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
