It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dan MacNeil of Bedford and formerly Fall River, N.S.
Born Dec. 31, 1958, in Sydney Mines, Dan died at home on Oct. 18, 2013. Son of the late John T. and Margaret Frances (MacKenzie) MacNeil.
Dan is survived by his wife, Heather Leslie and daughter, Joyce MacNeil, and extended family.
After spending his childhood years in Sydney Mines, Dan graduated from Acadia University in 1981 with a BSc, specializing in microbiology.
Upon graduation he began working in quality control in Nova Scotia fishing firms and in 1983 began a long career as a highly respected microbiologist for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and later the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Dan was a wonderful dad to his beloved daughter Joyce, an adventurous and highly skilled cook, a great friend, neighbour, son, son-in-law, who would do anything for anyone. He deeply loved his family, including the four-legged members, and some of his happiest moments were found exploring woods near and far with his beloved dog, Bob.
Friends, neighbours, and colleagues are invited to gather with Dan's family to share memories and celebrate Dan's life at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, where a reception will follow. Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Halifax.
If you desire to honour Dan with a memorial donation, causes that would be close to his heart would include the SPCA or your favourite animal welfare charity, or an international development organization which helps children and families such as Plan Canada or the Nova Scotia Gambia Association, or simply remember to pass on a kindness to others wherever you can.
