Marguerite S. E. “Bud” Steel

Marguerite Shirley Estelle Steel (nee Rose) passed away peacefully at Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon at the age of 96 years. She was a loving mother of five and good friend to daughter Mary-Ellen and sons Rick and Scott, and proud grandmother to Alicia, Sarah, Zachary, Shaymus, Madeleine, Trevor, Rebecca (Soloniuk), David (Watling), and great grandchildren Curtis, Bradley, Shea and Ty. She was predeceased by husband Howard (2001), son Robert (1979) and daughter Beverley (1979). Mom moved to Prince Albert from Regina in 1950 where she was a devoted wife to Howie and a nurturing and caring mother to her children. She attended Calvary United Church and was an active member of United Church Women. When Dad retired from public service in 1976 they moved to White Fox where Dad was elected Mayor. They made many new friends there and will be remembered for their active involvement in municipal affairs. After the death of her husband Mom moved to Saskatoon (2002) where she resided at Luther Riverside Terrace until 2013. Throughout her lifetime Mom had a love of words and language, which she instilled in her family. Rarely could she be found without the most difficult and challenging cryptic crossword puzzles under way and there were few pastimes she enjoyed more than a good game of Scrabble, which she usually won handily. She was a loyal Roughrider fan and ‘armchair coach’ and followed the fortunes and misfortunes of the team religiously. A keen observer of current events till the end, Mom could always be counted on to voice her own unique ‘take’ on issues large and small and, given the opportunity, without doubt, she might have solved many of the world’s problems. Some of Mom’s happiest times were spent every summer at the family cottage at Murray Point. She loved to swim and socialize with lifelong friends while soaking up the summer sun. Mom also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and needlepoint. More than a mother, Mom was a good friend to her family and all who knew her. Her best times were spent surrounded by family, sharing a good home cooked meal and vigorously discussing events of the day. She was kind and considerate to all she came in contact with. She was a humble and gentle woman who would always lend a hand while expecting little in return. She always had a smile and a cheerful laugh through good times and bad and, till the very end, valued each and every day. At the end she joyfully looked forward to being reunited with her loving husband once again. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Luther Riverside Terrace and to the Doctors and staff at St. Paul’s Hospital, for the care and professional support they provided to our mother and grandmother. Burial arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, Myriam Minier, Funeral Director, Prince Albert, SK. She will be interred next to her husband at South Hill Cemetery.
