Effie Rogers

ROGERS , EFFIE - October 13, 1919 – November 12, 2013 - Effie Jane (Hartley) Rogers, born in Hartley Settlement, October 13, 1919, was the eldest of three children born to Lillian (Campbell) Hartley and Percy Hartley. She was followed by brothers Van and Vince, both of whom helped with the liberation of Holland in 1945. Effie was a teacher at heart, playing school with her cousins, aunts, and other neighbourhood children - and she was always the teacher. After graduating from Provincial Normal School in Fredericton, she went on to teach in a number of one-room schoolhouses in Carleton County. She met the Rogers clan (consisting of 13 children, 10 sons) during her teaching contract in Fielding – one of the Rogers sons, Earle, was responsible for building the morning fires in the schoolhouse woodstove. Earle was captivated by the new schoolteacher and they were soon married. They set up housekeeping in different communities in New Brunswick, the longest tenures being in Fielding and Lindsay. Eventually Effie and Earle moved to Peterborough, Ontario to be closer to their three daughters, Charlotte, Brenda and Arlene, and grandchildren Danny and Leila. In 2004 Effie decided to share a residence in downtown Mississauga with her youngest daughter Arlene and her husband Isaac. She passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2013. Effie and Earle would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on November 11th of this year. Effie is sadly missed.
Burial will take place at the Fielding Cemetery on Tuesday November 19, 2013 at 2pm with a reception to follow.
