It is with great sadness that his family announces the passing on November 18, 2013, of Michael L. Bates, at the young age of 66, retired Captain, City of York Fire Department, Toronto, following a courageous battle with cancer, at his home surrounded by loving family, in the arms of his wife Patt. It was a beautiful passing – finally at peace, with no more suffering. Survived by his wife Patt (nee LeClair), his daughters Joslyn (John Douglas) Hill and Jennifer Bates, the mother of his children, Christine Bates, father Harry Bates, brother Brian (Donna), sister Donna Weller (Bruce), brother Harvey (Sharon), nieces Sharon Homem and Sarah Bates, nephews Sean Weller, Kyle Bates, Christopher Bates and Brian Bates, Jr. Lovingly remembered by a number of grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Predeceased by his mother, Mary McArthur Bates, niece Lisa Bates and brother-in-law Arthur Weller. Resting at the Rooney Funeral Home, 419 Main St., Alberton. Visiting hours Friday, Nov. 22, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. until the Service of Remembrance at Rooney Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friends and family are invited to gather to remember Mike at the Rodd Mill River Resort on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or Prince County Hospital Oncology Unit.
