It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Philip Martin
on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of William and Dolores (Richards) Martin.
He was a painter by trade, and was the caretaker of St. Anthony Daniel Church for many years.
He was a Chicago Blackhawks fan, he enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. He enjoyed the simple things in life, spending time with his family, friends and his cat Sammy. Phil was also known as 'Luke' or 'Coach', he coached baseball for many
years, winning the Nationals in '98 and representing Canada at the World Series in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Besides his parents, Willie and Dolores, Phil is survived by his wife, Joan (MacDonald) Martin; his son, Philip Douglas Jr. (Magen), Halifax; brothers, Dale (Karen) Martin, Portage, Willie (Shelley) Martin, Sydney, Blair (Barbara) Martin, Sydney River, Billie (Paula) Richards, Trenton. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Rita MacDonald and Theresa (Matthew) Jacobs; brother-in-law, Jimmy MacDonald; aunts, uncles and cousins;
his nieces and nephews, Chris and Geoff Richards, Joshua and his goddaughter, Kelsey 'Princess' Martin and Michael Martin, Brad Jacobs, Chris and Shawn Newell, great-grandnephew, Evan as well as his best friend, Dan MacDonald.
Phil was predeceased by his grandparents, Mabel and Dan Richards and Agnes and Ernest Martin, his mother and father-in-law, Mary and Harold MacDonald.
Visitation will be held today, Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place 11 a.m.,Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Holy Rosary Church with Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the An Cala Unit, CRRH or the Palliative Care Unit, CBRH.
