It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of Walter Petrie on Dec. 24, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his wife, close family and friends by his side.
Born in New Waterford, N.S., he was the son of the late Walter and Christina (MacDonald) Petrie Sr.
Walter was a member of the Parish of St Leonard, he was formally of St. Agnes and had a strong faith. Walter worked in many fields and was proficient in all, but his first passion was a third generation coal miner. He would help any and every one that needed a hand; this led him to be a recipient of the Lieutenant Governors Medal of N.S in 1974 for volunteer service.
Walter was unique in the fact he could turn his hand to anything and his next passion was carpentry, he worked in various parts of this country applying his trade. The Lord must have had a problem on the 24 of December and called on Walter for a hand.
He is survived by his loving wife Donna (Ropek), brother in-law Teddy, brother Gerald (Darlene), sisters, Patricia and Janet (Vernon) Lord. He is also survived by very special nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts and many adopted nieces and nephews that Walter thought highly of, many good friends that he laughed and joked with over his short time here and finally he leaves behind four very close friends, Brian and Rose McPherson and his good buddy Danny and Marilyn Kalbhenn.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother Doug Petrie.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a private chapel service today (Friday, Dec. 27) at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Deacon Leo Penny officiating.
