It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our Mother, Shirley MacNeil, wife of the late Ian MacNeil on Jan. 4, 2014, in the Northside General Hospital.
Shirley was born in Glace Bay and grew up in Sydney, the daughter of the late Murdock and Annie (Morrison) Kerr.
Shirley enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge club members, baking for her family, reading, and singing in the Rotary show chorus in Showboat, Desert Song and Student Prince. As a young adult, she volunteered as a Brown Owl. She was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s United Church and Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Ainslie MacNeil-Campbell (Bill) of Halifax; sons, John MacNeil and Alan MacNeil (Norma), both of Sydney; grandsons, Nicholas Campbell of Calgary, and Tim Campbell of Halifax; granddaughter, Alexis of Sydney. She is also survived by her sister, Heather Inkpen (Ross) of Toronto; brother, Bruce Kerr of Sydney; brother-in-law, Bob Prier of Dartmouth and sister-in-law, Marg Kerr of Sydney River. Also, her dear friend and cousin by marriage, Thelma McCurdy.
Shirley was predeceased by sister, Elaine Prier, brothers, Ken Kerr (Rita) and Donnie Kerr.
A funeral service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Rev. Thomas Whent will officiate, reception following the service. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery, Mira at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, Northside/Harbour View Hospital Foundation or to a charity of choice.
The family would like to extend warm appreciation to Dr. Myatt and Janice, Dr. Joan Salah, the unbelievably caring staff of 4 West Northside General Hospital, and staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital and My Cape Breton Home for seniors in North Sydney.
