Passed in: North Sydney
Passed on: January 10th, 2014

The family of Mullins Daniel Hood, age 97, regret to announce his passing on Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Northside General Hospital.
Mullins was born in Florence, on March 23, 1916, to the late Wilson and Maria (Ross) Hood and moved to Little Bras d’Or at an early age.
Mullins started his working career at an early age of 9 years old, working heavy horses on construction of the Georges River Road. He was employed at Fairhome Farm for a short time during the summer, the Bras d’Or Coal Company and Marine Atlantic, but his true passion was farming. Mullins owned and operated “Morning Acre Farm”, breeding and raising his prized Registered Ayrshire dairy cattle, producing milk for British Canadian Co-op, Sydney Mines and Hersh’s Dairy, Sydney. He also showed his cattle at various exhibitions throughout the province. Mullins was an active member of the Cape Breton Federation of Agriculture and the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture. Mullins also served as Manager of the Cape Breton County Exhibition from 1960 to approximately 1975. Upon retiring from dairy farming, Mullins bred and trained race horses and traveled throughout Nova Scotia with “Wild Chance” at stud. Finding retirement too confining, Mullins returned to the workforce employed by Neil J. Walker Lumber Ltd. and finished his working career working for his son at Circle H Products Ltd. His leisure time was then spent tending his flower and rose gardens and mowing the lawns. During the summers, up until 2006, he assisted his son and friend Gordon Carter in hay making.
Popie’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren. The month of June would see him on vacation in New Hampshire with granddaughter Bobby Jo, August he was off to PEI for “Old Home Week” and the horse races with grandson Daniel, during the fall touring the mainland exhibitions with granddaughter Linda, and in the autumn it was trips around the Cabot Trail and fall colors with granddaughter Beverly. Popie made several trips to New York and spent a Christmas with granddaughter Marianne in Germany.
Mullins is survived by his only son, Robert C. and daughter-in-law Audrey (Lovett) Hood. Also surviving are his five grandchildren; Linda (Michael) Jobe, Truro, Beverly (Robert) MacLean, Groves Point, Marianne, Germany, Bobby Jo (Darren) Whalen, Halifax and Daniel (Jennifer Taylor), Georges River, his nine great-grandchildren Bradley & Lauren Jobe, Taylor & Katelyn MacLean, Breton, Matti & Dhani Whalen and Drew & Ryan Hood. Mullins is also survived by his sister Aries MacMillan, North Sydney and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mullins was predeceased by his wife Mary (Mullins) Hood; a son in infancy; brothers Robert W., Joseph, William and John and sisters Mary Christensen and Adeline Sturmy, nephews William 'Bill' Hood and Harvey Jensen.
The Hood family wish to thank Dr. Andrew Wawer, EMS, Ambulance Care Department, Emergency and 4 West at the Northside General Hospital for their compassion and care during Popie’s final days.
Honoring Popie’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. A private burial service will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, at a later date.
