Passed on: January 19th, 2014

With deep sadness we announce the passing of our dad on Jan. 19, 2014, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
He was born in Bras d’or on Sept. 26, 1926, to Daniel and Ella (Tobin) Laffin.
Bobby was a pretty easygoing guy who loved to have a drink and a dance whenever he could. He was always there to help anyone who needed it and could put his hand to most anything. He loved to ice fish in the winter and was an avid gardener with quite a green thumb. The residents at the guest home got to enjoy the beautiful strawberries and vegetables he grew in his garden the last two summers he was a resident there. Most of his working days were in the coal mines starting with the old pits in Bras d’Or. He was also a lobster fisherman and along with his wife June they ran Bob’s Canteen in Florence for many years.
A very special time in Dad’s life was when he was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in Oromocto, New Brunswick along with his brothers Nick and William. He fought the best opposition promoters offered him regardless of weight or reputation. He was fearless in the ring. He defeated some of the best amateur and pros active in the Maritimes in the 1940s and 1950s. Bobby was very proud to have been both a Cape Breton and Maritime Golden Gloves Champion.
He is survived by his sons, Art (Marla), Howie (Nancy), and his daughters, Carolyn (Lennard) Jenkins, Barbara (Lawrence) Jardine, Norma (Susie) (Basil) Cantwell, Roberta (Gerard) MacKinnon, Catherine (Danny) MacLean, Anna Parsons, Joan Laffin, Laura Lee (Colin) Bruce and Verna (Jeff) Spooney. By sisters Marie Nunn and Ella Mae Marsh and brother Nick Laffin. Dad is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife June (Howard), son David and grandson Kevin Laffin. Also his brothers, William, Terence, Johnny and Danny and sisters, Laura, Francis, Irene and a sister in infancy.
Following Dad’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. A private family service will be held at a later date. At this time we would like to thank Dr. Michel McKeough for the care he gave dad and a very special thank you to the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home. You guys were like family to him and he loved every one of you.
Donations in Dad’s name can be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.
