COTTREAU, Eleanor Marie – 83, Upper Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Daughter of the late Roger and Anina (Surette) Pothier, she was born December 23, 1930 in Wedgeport. In her youth, Eleanor attended the Halifax School for the Blind and went on to become a school teacher, subsequently teaching in school, at an elementary level, for some time. Afterwards, she would work as coordinator for the HOPE Centre in Yarmouth for 28 years, retiring at the age of 77. HOPE (Handicapped Organization Promoting Equality) is a drop-in center for persons with special needs. During her many years at HOPE, she helped provide handicap parking and accessibility in Yarmouth, as well as helped create and promote the HOPE Dial-a-Ride program and a summer camp program for less fortunate children. For Eleanor, family came first. She was a loving, devoted, and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister, whose life was dedicated to helping the needy. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Raymond Frank Cottreau, and by their children, Allen Cottreau, Wedgeport; Gordon Cottreau, Yarmouth; Frank Cottreau (Jody Churchill), Yarmouth; Greg Cottreau, Wedgeport; Gail (Kenny) d’Entremont, Wedgeport; Peggy (Wade) Newell, Plymouth; Bonnie (Landon) Shand, East Pubnico, as well as by 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Charles (Eleanor) Pothier, Toronto, and her sister, Blanche (William) Cottreau, Wedgeport. Aside from her parents, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Tracie, as well as brothers, Howard, Gordon, Percy, and Bobby, and sisters, Evelyn, Joey, Hazel, Pearl, and Mary. There was no visitation by request. The funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 20 at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father Albeni d’Entremont officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. It has been requested that there be family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the HOPE Centre or to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to H. M.
