Mary Agnes 'Aggie' Donovan

Born: February 28th, 1940

Passed in: Ingonish Halifax
Passed on: January 25th, 2014

On Jan. 25, 2014, God called home one of his angels. Mary Agnes Donovan (nee Whitty) passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Aggie was born on Feb. 28, 1940, and was the daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Hines) Whitty.
Aggie will live on in the hearts of her husband of 51 years, her one true love and best friend, Tom Donovan; their daughter, Wendy (Paul Guillemette), Glen Ross, Ont.; their sons, Doran (Laura), Halifax, and Sean (Becca), San Diego, California.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Alexis, Ella, Cole and Avery brought sunshine and laughter into her life. Nanny always made time to shower them with lots of love and affection.
Aggie is also survived by her brothers, Freeman (Flora Anne) Whitty and Doug (Judy) Whitty, both in Charlottetown, Maurice (Violet) Whitty, Ingonish Beach, Bert Whitty, Indian River, Joe (Edie) Whitty, Liverpool; and sisters, Cathy (Basil) Favaro, Cornwall, P.E.I., Lillian (Glen) Pepperdine, Enfield, and sister-in-law, Ivetta Whitty, Halifax, besides numerous nieces and nephews.
Aggie was a well-loved and respected school teacher for 35 years until her retirement. She began her career in Neil's Harbour and spent most of her teaching years in the Ingonish area. She was a dedicated and caring teacher; for her teaching was not just a job, but a labour of love. Her students felt loved and respected; many have approached her as adults to thank her for her kindness and to tell her of their fond memories of being in her class.
Aggie will be remembered for her amazing generosity, her strong faith and her endless hospitality to all who entered her home. "When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a beautiful treasure to always hold in your heart".
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Everett, Dennis and Barry, a sister, Theresa, sister-in-law, Sandra, nephews, Blair, Joseph, and Thomas, who was more like a son to her and Tom.
The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Dave Dupere, Barbara Stewart , Dr. Tim Benstead, Dr. Richard Leckey, Dr. John Ritter, Dr. Ed Kinley, Melanie Ellerker, Karen Gibson, Terri Cooper and the ALS Society of NS, ALS Clinic, Wanda Barron, Fr. Owen Connolly, Palliative Care, and VON. Your concern, care and dedication in helping all of our family during these past months were deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten.
Funeral arrangements made by Atlantic Funeral Homes. There will be no visitation. A funeral service will take place at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church, 5900 Inglis St., Halifax on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. to be immediately followed by a reception in the Church hall. Interment is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at St Peter’s Parish in Ingonish Beach.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the ALS Society, 900 Windmill Rd, Suite 113, Dartmouth, N.S., B3B 1B7 or St. Peter's Church Graveyard Fund, Ingonish Beach, N.S., B0C 1L0.
